Lacey the First ‘Idol’ Casualty

The toughest thing to learn is that you are the first to go. The 24 year old Lacey Brown from Amarillo, Texas, found out last Wednesday night that she was the first American Idol of the 12 finalists to be sent home. The decision is not that surprising but the biggest surprise was the judges’ save was brought back with a twist. This move was introduced last season this gives the judges the chance to save the one with the lowest vote. But the decision to be saved must be unanimous and it can only be used once. The week after it is used, two contestants go home. If the contestants are down to five, it cannot be used anymore.

During the last season, the one with the lowest vote was forced to sing the song that gave him/her the lowest vote. Now, the twist is that the singer can choose a song which he/she has performed during the past weeks. “The Story, was the song Brown chose, it was her best showing to date. But it turned out that the song was not enough. The judges didn’t use the save on her; they reserved it for the later part of the season when one of the favorites is at risk for elimination.

Paige Miles was also in the bottom two, her American Idol roommate. Miles had a problem with laryngitis this week, but her Honky Tonk Woman rendition of was enough to keep her alive. As expected, the favorites Siobhan Magnus, Michael Lynche, Crystal Bowersox and Casey James were out of danger. Aaron Kelly, Didi Benami and Lee Dewyze also were also safe.

The 17 year old Katie Stevens who Kara thought can win the title is still getting mixed reactions from the panel. DioGuardi asked her to focus on R&B, Cowell wanted her to focus on country and Randy said pop. Not much help also was the advice by Ellen DeGeneres which said that she chooses mariachi music.

Tim Urban and Andrew Garcia, the two remaining guys just got little praise. Urban settled in the bottom three after his reggae inspired performance Tuesday but was also saved by a lot of teen girls vote. David Cook the American Idol Season 7 winner showed the Season 9 hopefuls how it’s done singing Jumping Jack Flash. Two other singers also performed on the hour long show, Orianthi and Kesha. She tried be a fashion risk but ended up as a Lady Gaga wannabe. It is still unknown what they will sing this week, but hopefully it will be more contemporary.
